In 1987's Hellraiser, the character is portrayed by English actor Doug Bradley, who went on to reprise the role in seven subsequent Hellraiser films. In The Hellbound Heart, Pinhead is described as an androgynous being with a feminine voice.

Cenobites are usually only summoned to Earth through puzzle boxes, such as one called the Lemarchand Configuration (known as the Lament Configuration in the film series).

They exist in an extra-dimensional realm that is Hell or one of many versions of Hell that co-exist. Pinhead is one of the leaders of the Cenobites, said to be humans who were later transformed into demonic creatures blindly devoted to the practice of experimental sadomasochism. The name was then used in press materials, tie-in media, and on-screen in some of the film's sequels, although Barker himself despises the moniker. The production and make-up crew nicknamed the character 'Pinhead'â€”derived from his bald head studded with nails â€”and fans accepted the sobriquet. When Clive Barker adapted the novella into the 1987 film Hellraiser, he referred to the character in early drafts as ' the Priest' but the final film gave no name. The character first appeared as an unnamed figure in the 1986 Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heart. In it, Kirsty has been living the life of a nomad, drifting from town to town, never settling in one place for longer than a few years. This new book will discuss the 30 years between those two stories, seemingly ignoring the comic arc as Kirsty appears to be quite human throughout The Toll‘s pages. Enter Hellraiser: The Toll.Ī new book coming from Subterranean Press, Hellraiser: The Toll (review) is written by Mark Alan Miller, based off a story by Clive Barker, and bridges the time between The Hellbound Heart and its followup The Scarlet Gospels, which incidentally brought back the character of Harry D’Amour. That comic arc was set 20 years after the events of The Hellbound Heart, which leaves us with a rather large gap in her story, a gap that apparently holds some rather interesting adventures.

After the story, we kinda lost touch with Kirsty, although she appeared in Boom! Studios’ Hellraiser comics, ultimately transforming into a Cenobite. While many people first met Kirsty in the first two Hellraiser movies, she was introduced as Larry Cotton’s friend in Clive Barker’s 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, which also served as the first time we met Pinhead and the Cenobites.
